K-pop artists in numbers

K-pop, the pop music of South Korea, has grown from a regional genre into one of the most commercially powerful forces in global music. In 2025, K-pop acts held 7 of the 10 places on the IFPI Global Album Sales Chart, Stray Kids ranked as the second-biggest recording artist in the world behind Taylor Swift, and South Korea exported a record 301.7 million dollars of K-pop albums. In March 2026, BTS returned from military service with the album Arirang, which sold 4.2 million copies in its first week in Korea and 641,000 units in its first week in the United States, the largest week for a group since Billboard began counting units in 2014.

The business behind these artists is also larger than ever. HYBE, the company behind BTS, SEVENTEEN, TXT and ENHYPEN, earned a record 2.65 trillion won, about 1.86 billion dollars, in 2025, and staged 279 concerts in 53 cities. The Korea Foundation counted 225 million fans of Korean culture worldwide in 2023, up 24-fold since 2012, with about 68 percent of fan clubs focused on K-pop. This report brings together the latest data on K-pop charts, album sales, exports, streaming, touring, the major agencies and the global fan base.

K-pop on the global charts

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) publishes annual global charts that combine sales and streams across all markets. In its 2025 Global Artist Chart, which measures consumption of the whole catalogue of each artist across all formats, Stray Kids ranked second behind Taylor Swift, their highest placing and their fourth consecutive year on the chart since debuting at No. 7 in 2022. SEVENTEEN ranked 14th, their fifth consecutive year on the chart.

K-pop dominates physical album sales. On the IFPI Global Album Sales Chart for 2025, K-pop acts held 7 of the top 10 positions. Stray Kids Karma was second with 3.49 million units, behind only Taylor Swift The Life of a Showgirl at 6.05 million. SEVENTEEN Happy Burstday was third with 2.63 million, followed by ENHYPEN Desire: Unleash with 2.13 million, TXT The Star Chapter: Together with 1.62 million, ZEROBASEONE Never Say Never with 1.52 million, IVE Empathy with 1.49 million and G-Dragon Ubermensch with 1.37 million.

K-pop owns physical sales: seven of the ten best-selling albums worldwide in 2025 were by K-pop acts, led by Stray Kids Karma with 3.49 million units.

K-pop acts also filled much of the rest of the top 20. NCT WISH Color ranked 11th with 1.36 million units, ZEROBASEONE Blue Paradise 12th with 1.33 million, &TEAM Back to Life 13th with 1.30 million, RIIZE Odyssey 15th with 1.17 million, aespa Rich Man 16th with 1.13 million and BOYNEXTDOOR No Genre 18th with 1.12 million, with further entries for NCT WISH and IVE. In total, at least 15 of the 20 best-selling albums in the world in 2025 were by K-pop or K-pop-affiliated acts.

Album sales in Korea

Physical albums are central to the K-pop business. Fans buy multiple copies to collect photo cards, win entries to fan-sign events or boost first-week sales. According to Circle Chart, the official Korean music chart, sales of the top 400 albums reached a record of about 115 million to 120 million copies in 2023, then fell by about 19.5 percent in 2024, the first decline in a decade, and fell again in 2025 to about 93.5 million copies. The number of albums selling more than 1 million copies dropped from 33 in 2023 to 20 in 2024.

The market has rebounded strongly in 2026. In the first half of 2026, the top 400 albums sold about 53 million copies. BTS Arirang alone sold more than 4.2 million copies, including 4.16 million in its first week, and BTS had 22 albums in the top 400, accounting for 10.2 percent of the market. The rookie group CORTIS sold 2.31 million copies in its first week, and 14 acts passed 1 million first-week sales, together selling about 22.6 million copies.

K-pop album exports

As domestic sales have weakened, exports have kept growing. According to the Korea Customs Service, South Korea exported a record 301.7 million dollars of K-pop albums in 2025, up 3.4 percent from 2024. Japan was the largest market at 80.6 million dollars, although shipments fell 10.2 percent. China rose to second place with 69.7 million dollars, up 16.6 percent, ahead of the United States at 64.0 million dollars.

Japan, China and the US lead: the three largest markets bought 214 million dollars of K-pop albums in 2025, about 71 percent of total exports of 301.7 million dollars.

The other leading importers of K-pop albums in 2025 were Taiwan, Germany, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Canada, France and Poland. The growing role of Europe and North America reflects the spread of K-pop fandom beyond Asia, while the recovery in China follows years of restrictions on Korean cultural content there.

Streaming: the most-streamed K-pop artists

Streaming has become a second pillar of K-pop success, especially outside Korea. In Spotify Wrapped 2025, BTS were the most-streamed K-pop act globally, followed by Stray Kids, Jennie, Rose, HUNTR/X, TWICE, BLACKPINK, Jungkook, ENHYPEN and KATSEYE. The rise of solo members of BLACKPINK and BTS, and of the fictional group HUNTR/X from the Netflix film KPop Demon Hunters, shows how the genre is reaching new audiences. Streaming habits in Korea itself are changing. In June 2026, YouTube Music was the most used music streaming platform in South Korea with 9.49 million monthly active users, ahead of Spotify with 6.22 million and Melon, long the domestic leader, with 5.93 million. Usage of the top 400 digital tracks in Korea fell 4.3 percent in the first half of 2026, as listening shifted to global platforms.

K-pop on the Billboard charts

K-pop has become a regular presence at the top of the US charts. BTS Arirang debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in March 2026 with 641,000 album-equivalent units, including 532,000 pure album sales and 208,000 vinyl copies, the biggest vinyl week for a group since Luminate began electronic tracking in 1991. It was the seventh No. 1 album for BTS, and the lead single Swim debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. On its first day, Arirang drew 110 million Spotify streams, the most for any album in 2026, and its 14 tracks took the top 14 places on the Spotify global chart.

Stray Kids became the first act in history to debut eight consecutive albums at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. In 2025, the song Golden by HUNTR/X, the fictional girl group from the Netflix animated film KPop Demon Hunters, spent at least eight weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making HUNTR/X the first female group associated with K-pop to top the chart. The soundtrack became the first ever to generate four simultaneous top 10 hits on the Hot 100 and also reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The film audience is covered in our data on KPop Demon Hunters views on Netflix.

The rise of K-pop solo artists

Solo careers have become a major growth area for K-pop. The Spotify Wrapped 2025 rankings show how strongly individual members now perform on their own: Jennie ranked third and Rose fourth among the most-streamed K-pop acts globally, ahead of BLACKPINK as a group in seventh, while Jungkook ranked eighth. Among songs, APT. by Rose and Bruno Mars was the most-streamed K-pop track of 2025, Who by Jimin was third, a solo single by Jin was fourth and like JENNIE by Jennie was fifth. Seven by Jungkook featuring Latto, released in 2023, was still in the top ten.

Solo work allowed BTS members to stay in the charts while they completed their mandatory military service between late 2022 and June 2025, and it has given BLACKPINK members separate record deals and global audiences outside the group. For agencies, strong solo careers increase revenue but also make it harder to keep groups together when contracts come up for renewal, usually after seven years.

K-pop goes local: groups formed outside Korea

The largest agencies are now exporting the K-pop system itself by forming groups outside Korea. HYBE and Geffen Records created KATSEYE, a multinational girl group based in the United States, through a televised audition in 2024; by 2025 KATSEYE ranked tenth among the most-streamed K-pop acts on Spotify worldwide, and its song Gabriela was tenth among K-pop songs. HYBE Japanese group &TEAM reached 13th on the IFPI Global Album Sales Chart 2025 with Back to Life, selling 1.30 million units.

These so-called localisation strategies aim to reach fans who prefer music in their own language while using the training, production and fan engagement methods developed in Korea. They also reduce the reliance of agencies on the small Korean domestic market, where album sales fell to about 93.5 million copies in 2025. HYBE, SM and JYP have all launched or announced groups in Japan, the United States, China or Latin America.

Concerts and world tours

Concerts have become the fastest-growing source of revenue for K-pop artists. HYBE staged 279 concerts in 53 cities with 12 touring artists in 2025, up from 172 concerts in 2024, and its concert revenue rose 69.4 percent to 763.9 billion won, about 537 million dollars. BLACKPINK Deadline World Tour, their first all-stadium tour, ran from July 2025 to January 2026 with 33 shows across Asia, Europe and North America, including three nights at the Tokyo Dome for 165,000 fans and 150,000 fans at Singapore National Stadium.

The BTS Arirang World Tour, which began in April 2026, is planned as the largest K-pop tour ever, with about 85 stadium shows. It grossed 76.2 million dollars from 417,000 tickets across eight shows in April 2026 alone, and 124 million dollars from 660,000 tickets by May 10. Three shows at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa grossed 40.7 million dollars from 194,000 tickets. The tour is on course to beat the Love Yourself World Tour of 2018 and 2019, which grossed about 213.9 million dollars from 1.7 million tickets over 62 shows.

The big K-pop agencies

Most K-pop artists are developed and managed by entertainment agencies that train, produce, market and tour them. The four largest are often called the Big 4. HYBE is by far the largest, with revenue of 2.65 trillion won in 2025, up 17.5 percent. SM Entertainment, home to aespa, NCT and RIIZE, reported record revenue of about 1 trillion won. JYP Entertainment, which manages Stray Kids, TWICE and ITZY, reported revenue of 821.9 billion won, and YG Entertainment, home to BLACKPINK and BABYMONSTER, 545.4 billion won, up 49.5 percent as BLACKPINK returned to touring.

HYBE leads by a wide margin: HYBE earned 2.65 trillion won in 2025, more than the other three major agencies combined.

Revenue growth has not always translated into profit. HYBE operating profit fell 72.9 percent to 49.9 billion won in 2025, cutting its operating margin to 1.9 percent from 8.2 percent, because of heavy investment in new groups, overseas expansion and legal costs. In the first half of 2025, JYP had the highest operating margin of the Big 4 at 20.3 percent, followed by SM at 15.0 percent, YG at 8.9 percent and HYBE at 7.2 percent.

Inside HYBE: where the money comes from

The HYBE results show how the K-pop business model is shifting. Revenue directly tied to artists grew 16.4 percent to 1.684 trillion won in 2025, and indirect revenue from merchandise, licensing, content and fan clubs grew 19.3 percent to 965.8 billion won. Within these, concerts were the star performer, up 69.4 percent to 763.9 billion won, and merchandise and licensing rose 35.8 percent to 570.6 billion won. Recorded music, by contrast, fell 10.2 percent to 773.0 billion won, reflecting weaker domestic album sales.

Concerts up, albums down: HYBE concert revenue rose 69.4 percent in 2025, while recorded music revenue fell 10.2 percent.

The same pattern is visible across the industry. SM Entertainment reported that in the fourth quarter of 2025 its concert revenue rose 53.6 percent and merchandise and licensing 50.6 percent, while album and digital music revenue fell 22.8 percent. Agencies are increasingly relying on touring, merchandise, fan platforms and brand deals rather than album sales alone.

The global K-pop fan base

The Korea Foundation, with the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has counted members of Hallyu fan clubs worldwide since 2012. The total rose from 9.26 million in 2012 to 99.3 million in 2019, 104.8 million in 2020, 156.6 million in 2021 and about 179 million in 2022. In 2023, it reached 225 million, a rise of 46 million or 25.8 percent in a single year, spread across 1,748 fan clubs in 119 countries. About 68 percent of fan clubs focus on K-pop and about 10 percent on K-dramas.

Challenges facing K-pop

Key Challenges in Numbers
  • Falling domestic album sales: top 400 album sales fell from about 115 to 120 million in 2023 to about 93.5 million in 2025.
  • Profit squeeze: HYBE operating profit fell 72.9 percent in 2025 despite record revenue.
  • Digital decline at home: usage of the top 400 digital tracks in Korea fell 4.3 percent in the first half of 2026.
  • Concentration: BTS alone accounted for 10.2 percent of Korean album sales in the first half of 2026.
  • Environmental criticism: multiple album versions and plastic packaging have drawn criticism and dampened domestic demand.

The industry also faces questions about artist welfare, long training periods, strict contracts and disputes between agencies and artists, several of which have reached the courts in recent years. Military service for male stars interrupts the careers of the biggest boy groups, as the BTS hiatus from 2022 to 2025 showed. On the other hand, the return of BTS in 2026 and the global success of KPop Demon Hunters show that demand for K-pop remains strong.

The outlook for K-pop artists

K-pop enters the second half of the 2020s in a strong position. The BTS Arirang era has broken sales and touring records, Stray Kids and SEVENTEEN are among the biggest-selling acts in the world, and new groups such as CORTIS are selling millions of albums in their first week. Exports reached a record 301.7 million dollars in 2025, and the fan base passed 225 million in 2023.

The business model is changing, however. Growth is coming from world tours, merchandise, streaming and global fan platforms rather than from domestic album sales, and agencies are investing heavily in local groups outside Korea, such as KATSEYE in the United States and &TEAM in Japan. The key test for the industry will be whether it can turn global popularity into sustainable profits while addressing concerns about artists and the environment.
